Tips for the Developer Community

Tips for the Developer Community

Communities are usually built on the shared struggles of individuals. And if you are here reading this, it’s probable that you share these struggles with other game developers. Welcome to the club and it’s not an easy job but you will have a lot of satisfaction. If you want to grow as a game creator, we cannot overemphasize the importance of joining a community. There are many advantages, from sharing knowledge to mentorship, sharing support, sharing tools, code reviews, answering questions, and much more. If not, this will give you another perspective.

At Rollic we believe in the value of coaching and mentoring, as well as data, creativity and some other things. We’re interviewing developers and game designers all over the world for the exchange of ideas. This virtual community is for working on impactful projects with driven people. And most importantly resulting in scaleable hits. In the Istanbul HQ, Rollic Hub is functioning as a physical version of this community bringing together more than 50 developers and game designers.

If you don’t know where to start, follow what supportive projects there are to help you start. Imagine rapidly prototyping game designs and injecting new ideas to help inspire and grow the global game industry in a prescribed time (maximum of 48 hours). Game Jams are great if you want to test yourself around a common theme and constraints. The brief time span helps encourage creative thinking which results in small but innovative and experimental games. In the past month Rollic also realized the Global Game Jam, and brought game developers together in 7 different cities in Turkey.

Follow industry trends and leading events

Find out if there are specific events on gaming in your local city. If yes, you are lucky. If no, you are still lucky as most of these events are digital/kind enough to share the recordings of the sessions and many more.. At Pocket Gamer Connects London this year, we shared a lot of know-how and was a great opportunity for the exchange of opinions.

You need to build a team; as this is the initial step in founding your own game studio. Game Factory is one of these! Whether young people who are just curious about the game industry and want to get into this business, or those who have worked in this industry for years can apply for Game Factory. Everyone can start developing their own game immediately by joining a team that suits their abilities and level. This also gives a good chance of building a better team and start creating your own games as soon as possible.

If you already passed these stages and have a running studio; there are still opportunities to get better. What you need will depend on your expectations and capabilities but a game designer and a developer can come together and build a successful studio. If you don’t know where to start, capital investments like oFON can be a good accelerator.

What is OFON? oFON (Game Fund) is an accelerating program that enables teams of talented developers to become successful gaming studios on a global scale. The teams that are accepted to the program established with a fund of 2 million TL are entitled to participate in a one-week orientation program at our partner studio Tiplay.

One last thing...

Rollic presents Hit Stories, a series of videos showcasing the production details of hit games. This way you’ll be able to see what’s happening backstage of the games you love to play!
